Client
Gary Farber — https://garyfarberphoto.com — Medford, Massachusetts
Gary Farber is co-owner and Director of Outside Sales and Marketing at Hunt’s Photo & Video , a cornerstone of New England’s photography community. A relationship-driven leader and trusted mentor to a new generation of wildlife photographers, Gary began his own photographic practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. His images—centered on wildlife and natural landscapes—reflect a deep sense of curiosity, patience, and reverence for the craft. This project emerged from Gary’s desire to create a personal, professional web presence that aligned with his evolving identity as a photographer, educator, and community connector.
Background
Gary and I connected through my son Maceo, one of several young photographers Gary has mentored over the last few years. As I got to know Gary’s story and his work, it became clear he needed a website that didn’t just showcase his photography — but honored his values, relationships, and leadership role within a vibrant creative community. With no prior site or brand identity, we collaborated closely to craft a digital presence from the ground up — one that reflects Gary’s quiet generosity, professional ethos, and deep commitment to photography as both an art form and a shared pursuit.
Design Opportunity
How might we create an authentic online presence that honors Gary’s analog process and emerging creative voice — while positioning him as a thoughtful and dynamic force in today’s photographic and artistic landscape?
Gary’s absence from the digital world presented a unique opportunity. We weren’t solving a usability issue or redesigning a legacy platform — we were building a strategic foundation. The goal was to introduce Gary to new audiences and collaborators without compromising the tactile integrity of his work or the trust-driven spirit he brings to every relationship. The website needed to function as both a curated portfolio and a launchpad for future initiatives — gallery exhibitions, mentorship, and community-based storytelling.
Strategic Approach
I proposed a custom-designed, portfolio-style website that would mirror the core values of Gary’s photography — minimalist, grounded, human-centered, and honest. This experience would be content-forward and brand-consistent, offering a quiet narrative introduction to Gary’s creative world while also presenting selected works and current projects in an elevated, professional way.
To support this, I developed a flexible brand system and storytelling voice that could extend beyond the website — laying the groundwork for Gary’s broader digital presence, including social platforms, outreach materials, and speaking opportunities.
Process
Our collaboration started with deep listening: understanding Gary’s goals, workflow, and impact within his community. I conducted informal interviews, assessed the digital landscape of comparable photographers, and identified opportunities for differentiation through brand and content strategy.
From there, I led content development, site architecture, and voice and tone design. Using generative tools like ChatGPT, we rapidly explored narrative directions, which I then refined into messaging that aligned with Gary’s perspective and values.
Visual exploration came next — drawing inspiration from darkroom aesthetics, clean editorial systems, and contemporary UX patterns. I handled design and front-end development, building a responsive, accessible site optimized for readability, performance, and mobile-first experiences.
Regular check-ins with Gary kept our direction grounded, ensuring the work remained aligned with his creative goals and personal story.
Solution
The final site offers an immersive and emotionally resonant experience — balancing Gary’s analog roots with a confident, modern digital voice. Highlights include:
- A bold, narrative-led homepage that introduces Gary through story first, not just imagery
- A curated gallery system that showcases photographic series in a clean, editorial format
- Content-driven pages that explore Gary’s process, journey, and contributions to the photography community
- A flexible and appropriately-light design system built to scale across social media and print channels
- Thoughtful UX and responsive design principles that ensure a seamless experience across devices
Outcomes & Reflections
The site launched in June 2025 to overwhelmingly positive feedback from Gary’s peers, mentees, and collaborators. It now serves as the central touchpoint for his creative practice — and a professional platform for deepening his reach and voice.
Key Takeaways:
- Deep collaboration with a values-aligned client can elevate both form and function in a design project
- Strategic use of AI tools accelerates narrative development — when guided by thoughtful human direction
- Translating analog processes into digital systems is less about replication, and more about resonance
- Relationship-centered storytelling can be just as impactful as technical or visual design
What’s Next
Gary and I are continuing to grow his digital footprint through strategic storytelling, expanded social presence, and outreach aligned with his mentoring and community-building efforts. Our current focus includes a phased build-out of his LinkedIn profile and the development of communications to support potential gallery submissions and speaking engagements.
This project continues to remind me that digital design is not always about disruption — it can also be about quiet emergence, care, and connection.
